2017 Taught Businesses to Be Prepared For Disasters

 

From floods to hurricanes, tornadoes to wildfires, and even some earthquakes costing billions of dollars in damage, we were all given the reminder that Mother Nature is in charge. As we look back on this year, a key takeaway is the need to be prepared in the event of a disaster.

Now is the time to plan.

It is important to have a plan in place that will help minimize the risk if and when another situation occurs. Here are some things to consider:

  • Protecting assets: Whether it’s machinery, products you sell, office computers, or other equipment, you are able to protect these assets. Even if they are secure in a warehouse, it is never a bad idea to cover them with tarps and make sure they are off the ground, if possible.
  • Being covered: Now is a great time to contact your insurance company to see what you are covered for. Do you have wind and flood coverage? What happens if the roof comes off your facility? These questions should be asked now, not days before or weeks after a storm hits.
  • Energy: Just like with your home, your business should be able to operate even if the power is out. Backup generators are more reliable, affordable, and also easy to store. Now is the time when you want to start buying supplies, as the demand is low and the supply is high.
  • Communication: It can be difficult to reach employees if cell towers are down. When disaster occurs, you need to keep communication open via radio or another source.
